In biomed, we try as much as possible to use non-medicated treatments unless the situation warrants it. We now know that Panadol (paracetamol) lowers glutathione levels, so biomed parents try as hard as possible to avoid it. We use natural means such as cooling down the forehead with a cold cloth, additional anti-oxidants, epsom salt baths, natural anti-virals and immune modulators for low grade fevers. Previously, should my girls’ fever spike up to 38.4 degrees Celsius and above, I will resort to Panadol. For very high fevers, we had to use Voltaren suppositories. However, for some children who do not respond to natural treatments, paracetamol or ibuprofen due to certain medical conditions, it is a very scary time indeed when their children’s fevers spike up to 40 degrees Celsius and they can’t do anything about it.

I find Children’s Fever Complex extremely effective. It is a homeopathic remedy recommended by my homeopath from Homeopathy Plus! in Australia. When my girls had low-grade fevers, I gave a dose and the fever subsided within 15 minutes and didn’t recur. Since I’ve used this, we have never experienced high fever.  However, it should be interesting to see if it will work for high fever. Umcka Cold Care

There are many cold and flu homeopathic remedies on the market. I have tried several brands and Umcka’s Cold Remedy is my current favourite. It shortens the duration and reduced the symptoms for cough, congestion, sore throat and other cold symptoms. This is my favourite for it’s effectiveness on myself and my girls. Do take note that some homepathic remedies are in an alcohol base. This may not be suitable for some Muslims, however many pharmaceutical and prescription medicine contains alcohol too. I was concerned about the taste as an alcohol based homeopathic remedy do have a strong taste. Umcka’s is alcohol-free drops in a mild, pleasant tasting liquid.

Oscillococcinum is a favourite remedy for a friend of mine. This is her first line of defense for colds and flu. She will give it to her child at the first symptoms of flu with good results. I was not able to give it to my girls as they are non-liquid. Instead they are quick-dissolving pellets. They are teeny-tiny little pellets smaller than a sago pearl. A dose is meant to be dissolved in the mouth, something that my girls refused to do. However, with children who are compliant, this may be a good alternative.

Bach Rescue Remedy

Bach Rescue Remedy acts as a natural stress relief, many parents use it for themselves or their children when traumatised, upset or stressed out. Bach Flower Essences are natural and can work in conjunction with herbs, homeopathy and medications. There are different types of Rescue Remedy- spray, cream or drops. However I was only able to get the drops and not the cream as I referred. I put several drops into a small amount of water but my girls rejected the taste. So I put several drops on my girl’s wrists and rubbed it in. I’m not sure if it works or just a placebo effect, but now whenever the girls upset, stressed or having a tantrum, I rub some on their wrists. Now, whenever May is feeling overwhelmed, emotional or stressed out, she actually asks me to get her the Rescue Remedy.
